In years past, a good lesbian movie was hard to find. But thanks to streaming services like Netflix, we’re seeing more films that feature lesbian, queer, and bisexual protagonists falling in love, breaking up, or just dancing and singing their way through a Midwestern high school prom. These films give audiences a chance to see characters, who have so often been left off-screen, just living their lives; they offer representation to a large slice of the population too often ignored by good news? The tide is slowly turning. According to GLAAD’s 2021 Studio Responsibility Index, more LGBTQ+ characters were prominently included in studio-backed feature films last year. But bisexual representation is still on the decline. And while there was a welcome increase in lesbian representation and racial diversity of LGBTQ characters, the data also made clear that the film industry still has strides to make. In particular, the study did not find a single transgender, nonbinary, or disabled LGTBQ character in any of the films sampled. In addition, a whopping percent of major studio-backed films did not include any LGBTQ representation. So it’s more important than ever to stream lesbian-centric TV shows and films, promote their numbers, and open up dialogues on the future of lesbian filmmaking—how it can be even better, more inclusive, and more thought-provoking. To start, check out these lesbian movies on Netflix. You'll find super steamy films like Duck Butter, easy-to-watch rom-coms like The Prom, and heartfelt documentaries like Tig and just about every genre in between. 'The Prom'Image credit MELINDA SUE GORDON/NETFLIXRyan Murphy’s big musical movie, adapted from the Broadway show by the same name, premiered in December 2020 and has left many singing the bubbly soundtrack since. The star-studded cast includes Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep as Broadway stars who travel to Indiana to advocate for a student who isn’t allowed to take her girlfriend to the senior prom. The dance numbers are glitzy, the songs are catchy, and the straight-from-the-headlines plot will be relatable for LBGTQ+ and allied viewers now'The Half of It'Image credit KC BaileyFilmmaker Alice Wu’s outstanding follow-up to her early aughts romcom, Saving Face, received high acclaim when it debuted on Netflix in spring 2020. Set in a small town, this movie follows social loner Ellie Chu who agrees to ghostwrite a jock’s love letter to a girl who Ellie also has a crush on. It’s heartwarming chaos from there on now'Duck Butter'Image credit NetflixA film that basically takes place in quarantine before many of us knew quarantine was a thing we’d have to do, this indie film from 2018 follows two women who meet at a bar and decide to go through all the stages of an intense romance within just 24 hours. No U-Haul now'Vita & Virginia'Image credit TCD/ / Alamy Stock PhotoOne of several “forbidden love period dramas” from the late 2010s it’s a whole genre, Vita & Virginia is a fictionalized biopic of Virginia Woolf and her lover, author Vita Sackville-West. Set in London in the 1920s, the film follows the couple’s illicit romantic relationship they’re both married to men and its influence on Woolf—who later writes “Orlando” based on this now'A New York Christmas Wedding'Image credit Mar Vista FilmsIf you’re eager to take a trip, this queer holiday film is for you. The fantastical plot takes a bride-to-be on a journey alongside her guardian angel who shows her what life could be like if she coupled up with her childhood best friend a woman who, in real life, died by suicide following a trauma. This film is both genre-less and mind-boggling, but simultaneously now'So My Grandma’s a Lesbian'Image credit NetflixIn this Spanish film, two women in their 70s come out to their families and reveal their plans to get married. It comes as a bit of a shocker—an entertaining shocker—to say the now'To Each, Her Own'Image credit Thierry Valletoux/NetflixA young Jewish woman, Simone, finally feels ready to tell her family that her roommate is more than her roommate. But then she finds herself falling for the male chef at her local lunch spot. It's a French version of the classic bisexual indie film Kissing Jessica Stein but stands on its own as a fun and controversial story of a confused queer woman in now'A Secret Love'Image credit NetflixProduced by Ryan Murphy, this documentary is about a former All-American Girls League baseball player named Terry Donahue and her partner, interior designer Pat Henschel, who had a seven-decade relationship which they kept a secret from their families the entire time. It’s a beautiful love story that celebrates the couple while reminding us of how far things have come for LGBTQIA+ people in America. watch now'Elisa & Marcela'Image credit NetflixA gorgeous period film about two women in 1901 Spain who want to get married, so one adopts a male identity so they can pose as a heterosexual couple. Based on a true story about the first well, recorded same-sex marriage in Spain, it’s a heart-wrenching but ultimately very beautiful film about what women had to face to be together not so long ago. It ends with the hopeful postscript about how same-sex marriage was legalized in Spain in now'Tig'Image credit NetflixPart documentary, part stand-up comedy special, this unique film follows comedian Tig Notaro as she heals from sickness, loses her mother, and falls in love with her partner. It’s emotional, funny, and highly entertaining; you won’t just watch it once. Want more Tig jokes? Her 2018 comedy special “Happy to Be Here” is also streaming on Netflix. watch now'Anne+ The Film' Image credit NetflixBased on the Dutch web series “Anne+,” this feature film follows Anne, a 20-something lesbian in Amsterdam, as she deals with writer’s block, an impending move to Montreal, and a tricky relationship with her ex which could change her whole life. You can totally skip the two seasons of the web series and jump right into this flick, but we recommend watching Anne’s entire trajectory. watch now'I'm Not Okay With This' Image credit Courtesy of NetflixTechnically, this is a one-season Netflix original series, but the seven episodes watch like a movie and can easily be binged in a three-hour sitting. Adapted from a graphic novel of the same name, this show follows 17-year-old Syd as she grapples with a crush, questions about her sexuality and, naturally, some scarily destructive superpowers. watch now'Bruised'Image credit NetflixHalle Berry’s 2021 directorial debut wasn’t a critical favorite, but have the critics spent hours wrestling with an Apple TV remote to find something remotely queer to watch? No, they have not. For that reason, dive into this sports drama following disgraced MMA fighter Jackie Justice played by Berry as she reconnects with a son she abandoned, the mother who failed her, and a hot MMA trainer, Bobbi Buddhakan Berroa. watch now by taylortox created - 27 Aug 2014 updated - 27 Aug 2014 Public From a teen girls point of view, these movies would be the best choice for watching. She enjoys the Berlin summer with her best friend Rosa, until a racist attack suddenly takes her out of her carefree life. Plagued by this trauma, she seeks reassurance from spirited karate training and from Macedonian Ronny, who works at the carnival. German Trailer with English Subtitles 2 Ma Belle, My Beauty France 2021 English and French, with English subtitles Lane, Bertie and Fred once shared a polyamorous relationship in New Orleans until Lane disappeared from their lives. Lane attempts to reshape their old, carefree dynamic, hoping that her return will lighten Bertie’s mood. But it appears that time has not healed all wounds. Official Trailer Ma Belly, My Beauty 3 Rebel Dykes – docu UK 2021 English, no subtitles “We weren’t lesbians, we were dykes.” Punk, pot, and activism against Margaret Thatcher’s repressive government formed an explosive cocktail in the 1980s in London. This delightfully rowdy documentary full of historical footage and music, interspersed with interviews with the women today, paints a powerful picture of a decade when these women were more than tired of asking nicely and politely for some tolerance. An absolutely necessary piece of lesbian history, clarifying that the radical “pot” fight did a lot for the LGBTQ+ community. Official Trailer Rebel Dykes – docu 4 As We Like It Taiwan 2021 Taiwanese and Mandarin, with English subtitles Shakespeare’s original already played with gender roles; after all, it was about the blossoming love between Orlando and Rosalind, who is disguised as a man. But in this adaptation, this is further amplified all the main roles are played by women. With energy and a lot of fun, a world of neon-lit Taipei is set, with magical interventions alongside action, fights, and family feuds. So basically, everything that belongs to a good Shakespeare, but all ready for a non-binary and dazzling version of today. Pure enjoyment! Trailer As We Like It 5 Leading Ladies Colombia 2021 Spanish, with English subtitles Long-held secrets and new lies come to light at a dinner party among five queer friends. Diana, Ana, Silvia, and Ana María celebrate that Marce is back. But why did she leaves in the first place, and where did she go? This improvisation-based film manages to create a more intimate, yet darker setting with each revelation. An intense contemporary drama from Colombia about the complex relationships between women. Trailer Leading Ladies 6 Sweetheart UK 2021 English, no subtitles AJ is an environmentally conscious and socially awkward teenager who drags herself through life. Ideally, she would like to plan a gap year to knit sweaters for elephants. Reluctantly, she accompanies her family to a dreary vacation park in Dorset for a week of hell’. But then suddenly there is the free-spirited and energetic lifeguard Isla by whom she becomes fascinated. Could she mean the beginning of AJ’s happiness? Official Trailer Sweetheart 7 Bliss – Glück Germany 2021 German, English and Italian, with English subtitles Sascha has been working in a Berlin brothel for many years. Maria is the new girl, she is independent, maverick, and queer. Sascha feels immediately attracted to this otherness, Maria in turn feels fascinated by Sascha’s supreme ease. The attraction becomes a love that works differently than anything they have experienced before. But the happiness soon begins to show some cracks it is difficult for both of them to bare their whole souls. Official UK Trailer Bliss – Glück 8 The Divide France 2021 French, with English subtitles Two women are about to break up their relationship when one of them ends up in the emergency room due to a minor accident. While bickering, they find themselves in the middle of a frenzy that has been created by a Yellow Jacket demonstration outside the doors of the hospital. Outside and inside the Parisian hospital, things get seriously out of hand. A compelling film that extends over a frenzied night, in which the two women’s relationship drama pales in comparison to the social discussions held by wounded protesters. The tension rises even higher when the building is under siege and the staff has to close their doors for safety reasons. Trailer The Divide 9 Comets Republic of Georgia 2019 Georgian, with English subtitles Nora is only fourteen years young but is already slowly discovering what kind of pleasures life has to offer. We love a good lesbian sex scene. These formative cinematic experiences have helped make us the gay sexual creatures we are today. I recently solicited hot lesbian sex scene tips on twitter and combined that input with my own personal opinion, which includes the opinion that Elena Undone is a bad movie and nobody should have to watch it for any reason AND the opinion that the HBO biopic Gia made me gay. This is not a comprehensive list, and only represents films available to stream. I imagine if you’re here with me today reading this, you’re probably not looking for recommendations on DVDs to mail-order. Just a hunch! This post was originally written in 2018 and has been updated in 2021. Bound 1996 Directed & Written By Lana Wachowski & Lilly Wachowski Lana and Lilly were fans of sex-positive guru Susie Bright’s Lesbian Sex World, so they sent her a package in the early ’90s that contained a draft of Bound, asking if she’d honor them with a cameo. Lana and Lilly are sisters and trans women, at the time that this film was made, they were still presenting as male. It wasn’t an unusual request or one that particularly interested her, but she was impressed by the studio they were associated with and thus sat down to read the script. She fell in love with it immediately and agreed to the cameo but also offered them a different type of support “If you don’t think I’m too presumptuous, could I be your lesbian-sex consultant?,” she wrote. “I notice that whenever two lovers fall into an embrace, it doesn’t say exactly what happens next. On behalf of every moviegoer who can’t live through another syrupy, comb all lesbian love scene, could I please, please, please give you my words of advice on what two women like this would do in bed together?” They said yes, and she did, and holy shit did that decision pay off! Bound is streaming on Hulu. The Duke of Burgundy 2015 Directed & Written by Peter Strickland The Duke of Burgundy involves an extensive, drawn-out dom/sub relationship between a lepidopterist somebody who studies butterflies and the maid she brings into her home who has a lot of very kinky desires. It’s a very… unique film? Also, there’s no actual nudity but the lingerie they’re wearing is so hot that it sort of compensates for itself. The Duke of Burgundy is streaming on Netflix. Mommy is Coming 2012 Written by Sarah Schulman & Cheryl Dunye Directed by Cheryl Dunye Cheryl Dunye’s campy sex comedy set in the Berlin queer underground finds power femme Dylan Lili Harlow and charming masc Claudia played by queer porn performer Papi Coxxx looking to spice up their monogamous relationship with some sexual adventures. Dylan finds new experiences in a BDSM sex club and Claudia, now presenting as Claude, meets an older woman at the hotel where he works who turns out to be Dylan’s Mom! “With its embrace of older bodies, bodies of color, and bodies that do not fit into any one gender, the film also reflects an ever more fluid sense of erotic queer representation,” writes Julia Bryan-Wilson in ArtForum. “All manner of configurations of desire are on display here, as an astonishing array of objects and appendages are inserted and received in various orifices.” Mommy is Coming is streaming on Prime Video. Professor Marston & The Wonder Women 2017 Directed & Written by Angela Robinson If you don’t want any men in your sex scenes, this isn’t the film for you. But if that element doesn’t turn you off, you’re in for a lesbian-written-and-directed DELIGHT. This movie is hot and kinky as hell and makes you feel like it’s okay to want what you want and it will probably inspire you to go out there and get what you want without shame or inhibition. Professor Marston & The Wonder Women is streaming free on hoopla, Plex, Roku, tubi and Vudu. The Handmaiden 2016 Directed by Chan-wook Park Written by Chan-wook Park and Seo-Kyung Chung, adapted from Fingersmith, by Sarah Waters A beautiful, thrilling, meticulously plotted film; sumptuous and precise and erotically charged throughout. I could watch The Handmaiden ten times and it wouldn’t be enough but nothing will ever beat that first twisty time. Pajaba called it “the lesbian gothic psychosexual romantic thriller of our dreams.” Teo Bugbee at MTV called it “a film dedicated to getting off on the creative potential of sexuality, and by grounding that open exploration of desire in a story where two women find freedom through each other.” The sex itself isn’t kinky, but the movie is so directly about kink that it made the list anyhow. The Handmaiden is streaming on Prime Video. Wow Just a Lot of Lesbian Sex Happening Concussion 2013 Directed & Written By Stacie Passon After a concussion, a lesbian mom decides to become a sex worker who only sees women clients, leading to a bunch of small trysts and one complicated affair. Once upon a time I was feeling not particularly sexual but knew sex was on the agenda for that evening so I turned off all the lights and watched this movie with as much devoted attention as I possibly could muster and you know what, it worked! Concussion is streaming on Roku with ads or on Amazon. Duck Butter 2018 Directed by Miguel Arteta Written by Miguel Arteta, Alia Shawkat In her review, Heather Hogan wrote that the sex scenes, “which feel real and are not male gaze-y in any way,” were a highlight of this recent release, which sees Naima Shawkat, a struggling actor in Los Angeles; and Sergio Laia Costa; meet at a club and hook up and decide to spend a sleepless 24 hours together, having sex once an hour. Duck Butter is streaming on Netflix. Room in Rome 2010 Written & Directed by Julio Medem This is a terrible film you should probably watch on drugs. It’s also a film composed almost entirely of lesbian sex scenes and the two women involved in those scenes having conversations about their feelings and childhood trauma. Room in Rome is streaming on Direct TV for subscribers. Below Her Mouth 2017 Directed By April Mullen Written By Stephanie Fabrizi “One thing is clear about Below Her Mouth,” wrote Erin Sullivan in her minimally-starred review of Below Her Mouth, “its creators were committed to pulling off a realistic portrayal of what sex between two women can really look like for a mainstream audience. And they did! They did it so much. I’m talking a lot.” There are so many locations within a disaffected brooding artist’s loft/truck to fuck in, you know? And they do. They sure do so much! Below Her Mouth is streaming on YouTube. Better Than Chocolate 1999 Directed by Anne Wheeler Written by Peggy Thompson I’m sorry everybody but this is a mediocre film and the sex scenes give me chronic internalized homophobia but so many of you brought this up on twitter that I felt obligated to include it. It was, for its time, pretty wonderful, and was the first movie to show a trans woman with a lesbian friend group. It does have, to its credit, a lot of sexual content — we’ve got a sex toy collector, we’ve got bodypaint sex, we’ve got shower sex, we’ve got bathroom sex complete with a line of lesbians patiently??! waiting to use the bathroom where sex is being had, we’ve got a Mom discovering sex toys! So much sex! Good on everybody involved in this seminal film for having sex! Better Than Chocolate is streaming on Amazon. A Perfect Ending 2012 Written & Directed by Nicole Conn A very hot Mommi has never had an orgasm and her lesbian friends are like “okay you need to see someone” and by “someone” they mean an escort, played by undeniably absurdly hot lesbian actress Jessica Clark!! A steamy affair ignites in a film that finds a new way to be extra at every turn. A Perfect Ending is streaming on Hulu. Romantic Lesbian Sex Kiss Me / Kyss Mig / With Every Heartbeat 2011 Directed By Alexandra-Therese Keining, Therese Keining Written By Alexandra-Therese Keining One way to check if you’re really falling in love or not is to have sex. Just ask these two ladies who are about to become step-sisters! It’s complicated, sure, but any lesbian could tell you that complicated is just another word for “irresistibly hot.” With Every Heartbeat is streaming on Kanopy, Roku and Tubi. I Can’t Think Straight 2008 Directed by Shamim Sarif Written by Shamim Shaif, Kelly Moss I Can’t Think Straight is a tale of what happens when two very attractive women sustain intense amounts of sexual tension for a series of minutes, breaking every now and then to release that tension through sex scenes. Erin loved it! I Can’t Think Straight is streaming on Amazon. Summertime / La Belle Saison 2016 France Directed by Catherine Corsini Written by Catherine Corsini & Laurette Polmanss The poster for this film is not lying to you. The two women at the center of this story set in 1971 — about a young woman from the French countryside who moves to Paris to get away from her parents, where she falls in with a group of politically engaged feminists and falls in love with their leader Carol — do indeed spend a lot of time naked. They even have great French countryside sex! Summertime is streaming on Amazon. Ammonite 2020 Written & Directed By Francis Lee This movie is as dull as the fossils it wants us to mediate on but might possibly actually be worth it for the sex scenes? Which come straight out of the grey skies and sit right on your face! Full nudes! Kate Winslet finally takes that dress off!! Ammonite is streaming on Hulu. When Night Is Falling 1995 Written & Directed by Patricia Rozema A professor at a Christian university meets a free-spirited circus performer at a laundromat on the day her dog ran away and died and sparks fly!
